🌪️ The startup that's turning wind energy on its head
Chris Moore shares his vision to power the world with wind
Digital JPEGs of monkeys come and go, but some industries are everlasting
For decades, Energy has created fortunes, shaped geopolitical power, and has even caused major wars
Cleaner energy alternatives have emerged as the new frontier in this colossal industry; Bloomberg claims that a whopping $755B was spent on clean energy in 2021
Clean Energy has been on a tear as nations seek energy independence & consumers become more conscious of the negative effects of fossil fuels
A Pennsylvania startup is generating buzz through wind
Harmony Turbines has a unique turbine design that literally turns wind power on its head
While traditional wind turbines spin vertically (around their horizontal axis), Harmony spins horizontally (around its vertical axis), as depicted in the image below. This allows it to take full advantage of a small vertical space
Now Harmony saves its best bar trick for stormy weather - most turbines are required to shut down during gusty storms & gusty winds as these high speeds can damage the equipment
During harsh conditions, Harmony’s turbine collapses its surface area to protect the equipment while still collecting energy:
I talked to Chris Moore, he’s the founder of Harmony Turbines (and was probably an absolute menace in middle school science fairs). We chatted about…
His Biggest Mistake
Trying to prototype models that were too large. Chris originally set out to design large-scale models but quickly realized that this was too expensive for a cash-strapped startup
“It would be like creating a company and having your first product be a tank. We needed to start smaller to prove our concept & design while staying lean with expenses”
Why Equity Crowdfunding
Chris is actually in the middle of his 3rd equity crowdfunding raise, he previously raised over $400,000 from the community in past efforts
He didn’t want to take money from VCs, Chris views the oversized checks from these firms as a way for them to impose their will on a startup
Smaller checks from hundreds of investors were an appealing alternative, as he would be able to work on his mission the way he intends to
His Vision for the Company
Secure funding to move to the turbines into production
Sell the turbines for ~$2,500 each. At their current capacity, Chris believes they can make 100 turbines a month, which could bring in $3M/year
Scale up to a commercial version of the product. While the initial build is mainly for residential purposes, Chris believes the design can easily be scaled up and sold in bulk for commercial purposes
Startup Gifting Guide
We’re working on holiday gift guides - but these aren’t your grandmother’s gift guide.
Each product is sourced from a startup that is currently raising funds via equity crowdfunding - you can buy their products AND own a piece of the company
So far we’ve released gift guide editions for the adventurer + fashion-obsessed person in your life
